  1. We are an INTERNATIONAL AUDIENCE, and we are going to watch it (because of your excellent review).

  2. So I watched this review and went to see the series and now I am on episode 24 ( last available episode around as of writing) and I feel the need to go back and say thank you for this recommendation. Everything about this drama is beautiful it felt like I am reading a novel. The way they stitched the scenes from the different decades glide beautifully and all make so much sense to the viewer. That was a lot of creative thinking to do and really masterful to execute post prod I must say considering the story jumping from different eras without the viewer getting lost. I also feel like the whole cast are A plus in the way they portray their age (I didn't feel at all that mom and son's ages in real life are just a few years apart -they were convincing and didnt bother me at all considering I've watched them in a few dramas before). Dong Jie really did so much to elevate the drama and deserves praise for her acting. The subtle and minute facial expressions are good acting in the right places. She weaved so much emotions of a mother from a young mom to being cancer-stricken later in her life. And Yin Fang equally kept his pace as he matured and grow as decades went by. The shy young teen to the complex lives the younger generation live while riding the economic boom in China and the disillusionment of the life of the big city – he did it so well. I have the affinity to this situation coming from a small city and migrating to a bigger city here in the Philippines so I could definitely relate with his experience including his relationships back home. And oh the tiny little things that don't matter but matter so much make this a very well-thought production. I like how the drama does not force you to judge it for anything – whether it is a love story, a family saga, a portrait of mom and son, a novel-turned-book etc. The stories just keeps on an on an on and each episode felt like reading a novel and slowly turning a page for a new chapter.

Just also wanna add. I was really shipping Yin Fang and Wang Chu Ran who I first saw in Serenade of Peaceful Joy opposite Wang Kai. She was very beautiful in that drama (and one you'd hate too) but in TLGTM, she is very refreshing. I hope to see her in more dramas. The last time I felt the same way was watching Wang Kai's Like a River Flowing.

  3. this one sounds very interesting

  4. omg, I was watching the first episode because I like the lead actress because I know her from working with Chen Kun way back when they were young, and then from Ruyi's royal love… lol. I liked it and plan to finish it very soon 🙂

  5. Dong Jie is so talented, but same time she is so underrated

  6. Definitely something to watch! Cinematography that's actually "thinking".

  7. I was thinking of watching this drama even though the synopsis is kind of confusing in every site I find it but your review made me want to watch it even more. I like when dramas are more cinematic in style, it makes them different somehow; right now I have the same experience with this Korean drama called "Jirisan" because it feels like you're watching a nature documentary instead a suspense, murder mystery drama. And I liked the few episodes of "The Longest Day in Chan'an" that I watched, I found the cinematography to be very interesting and different compared to the rest of Chinese drama cinematography, so I do think I will enjoy watching this drama whenever I decide to start watching it.

  8. I've watched the first 14 episodes on VIKI. So far, it's quite sad, showing the emotional and financial damage caused by an ugly, messy divorce. It tackles tough issues still relevant today: gaming and alcohol addiction, income inequality, especially for single mothers, and bitter parental rights disputes. The cinematography is fine but the ML, as an adult, is made up to look quite sickly and frail. Not a happy feel good story, but I'll keep watching.

  9. On a completely unrelated note because your videos are always super high quality, you look georgeous on that outfit and hair

  10. Off topic, but just need to say it: the color of that sweater goes incredibly well with your skin tone 👍

  11. Thank you Avenuex for your recommendation. I am a junky of good story telling drama. And I saw it has eng sub in youtube😊
I like drama that portray old time line becoz I can connect more with my own memory..

  12. Out of context.. I think you look very gorgeous in this vid
I don't think I'll watch it. The drama which will dry out my tears is not my cup of tea

  13. You look amazing in this sweater. This color looks so great on you!

  14. Please make a first impression for Out of the Dream next! The trailer really caught my eye when it first came out.

  15. So this is Youku's "prestige" drama for the 2021 award season.

  16. Started watching it a couple days ago, Avenuex, agree with all your comments. But on Youtube, the Eng subs only up to Ep 5😒

  17. Sounds similar to "Like a French Movie" now on Viki which I hated. I do not need to turn to theater for reality, I get it 24/7 from life. If actors are getting lots of money to be entertainers, the very least I should expect of them is to entertain me, not burden me with more reality. I will be skipping this one. I enjoy your reviews, however, even when I disagree with you.

  18. I will never ever be able to watch this drama. I would love to watch it but my heart won't take it. So, i shall imagine its beauty with the vividly portrayed scenes expressed by AvenueX.

  19. I thought it was going to be a sob story so thanks for the review as I am going to check it out. Yeah, the title is a bit off putting.

  20. OK. You've sold me. I've nipped over to Rakuten VIKI and opened up the series. Love your work – from Sydney (Au).

  21. Think it's ironic that Dong Jie plays a single mother in this drama when, according to media, she hasn't allowed Pan Yueming to see their son in nearly a decade

  22. That's hilarious…the actor and I have almost identical histories (except I never moved to Japan, I wish, though I do speak it fairly well). Went to business school, then decided to become an actor, got an MA in acting, and now working as a performer full time hahaha. How wild 😜

  23. Complete side note but….. the colour of that sweater on you is wonderful…. Wear that colour more

  24. You look so good in that color and with your hair down like that! I don't know what you did but, you look great in this video.

  25. You made me watch the Trailer, and now I am crying. As the mom of a son this hit me right in the heart.

  26. I think most probably it will not be popular is because it is a sad ending or tragic story, people tends to stay away from such drama

  27. Dunno why but when I first see the title, Tokyo Tower pop up in my head.

sentimental mother and son relationship with flashback.. check
son leave his mom to study/struggle/work in big city.. check
mother got cancer but hide it.. check
    story based on autobiography.. check
made audience cry A LOT.. check

Anyway, from all the praise it gets, I'm looking forward to it.

  28. You look great in that sweater :O <3

  29. I’m sold. Will watch based on your review 👌🏻👍😊 thanks for your recommendation

  30. You are right about the female actress affecting people not wanting to give this show a chance. Getting a divorce is nothing wrong if two people make it work anymore, but to do it in such a messy way😒😒

  31. Longest day in Chang'an ? Well no wonder it is well made then…

  32. 丁碧云和梅众的感情看哭死我了 很久没有被一段感情那么感动..

  33. Now this is some good casting choices! Especially compared to the recent movie 第一炉香 Love After Love where the casting just makes me speechless. If you can find a Chinese actor who speaks near-native Japanese, then surely you can find a suitable actress and actor to play those two main characters in that movie.

Ma Sichun’s character is supposed to be a petite poor female student, Peng Yuyan’s character is supposed to be a handsome but gloomy and kinda feminine-looking rich playboy.
These two look the complete OPPOSITE of their characters. Neither are their acting skills good enough to make viewers ignore this huge elegant in the room.

That movie just makes me wanna facepalm so damn much, especially consider the god-tier golden production team😭

  34. 16:18 what drama is it?

I remember the ridiculous "love me if you dare" scene when native American speaking with ML but their understand each other 😂

  35. What happened with Dong Jie? Any clear article?

  36. Thanks so much for the review it is so much needed to be highlighted, I appreciate this <3

  37. I was waiting for this review 😍😍😍 I knew you will like it
Am in love with the mother story much more, I like the ending theme song too.

  38. Loved your enthusiasm and expressiveness.
