10 dead, 11 injured in Kogi car crash

At least 10 people died while 11 others were injured in a car accident along Obajana – Lokoja in Kogi State on Friday evening.

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Malam Shehu Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja by the Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Mr Olusegun Ogungbemide.

Mohammed said the accident which occurred at 23.30 in Apamaru involved a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus with registration number KTG 100YL carrying 21 male passengers.

According to him, the initial investigation carried out by the FRSC revealed that the accident was caused by speed violations and overtaking errors by the driver.

The driver, he said, lost control of his vehicle.

He added that the injured victims were evacuated to Fisayo Hospital, Obajana, while the bodies of the deceased were handed over to the families.

Mohammed warned against night travel, excessive speeding and wrongful overtaking.

He emphasized that these factors remain the main causes of fatal accidents in Nigeria.

Mohammed appealed to passengers to be alert and proactive by warning or reporting reckless drivers on the road.
