20 Arrested in connection with the alleged scandal of hacking UTME

Safety operative has arrested 20 people suspected of regulating large -scale hacking from 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), increasing new concerns about the integrity of the Nigerian computer -based testing system.

The suspects were arrested in Abuja by operations of the State Service Department (DSS) and the Nigerian Police (NPF), according to a report by by by Television channel on Friday. They are believed to be a wider member of a syndicate involving more than 100 people, with operations reportedly targeting inspection bodies such as joint revenue and the Matriculation Board (Jamb) and the National Examination Board (NECO).

Sources in the Security Institution said the suspects claimed to deliberately sabotaged UTME with the intention to discredit the computer-based testing model (CBT) and to prevent adoption in future inspections by Neco and the West African Examination Council (WAEC).

The investigation revealed that the group collected students between N700,000 and N2 million in return for the UTME score which increased artificially. Their operations are allegedly carried out through private schools and tutorial centers, which function as centers for illegal activities.

Controversy about UTME 2025

This year’s UTME, which began nationally in April, was mired in controversy before revelation. Many candidates voiced frustration of logistics problems, including posted to a distant testing center. The release of results on May 9 further triggered dissatisfaction, with more than 78 percent of candidates print under 200 signs of the possibility of 400.

Public attacks quickly followed, with students and parents expressing doubts over the credibility of the exam.

Responding to a developing concern, Jamb applicant Prof. Ishaq Oloyede spoke to the media on May 14, acknowledged technical errors during the initial days of the exam. He revealed that 379,997 candidates had the results were compromised because of the wrong server update in Lagos Jamb and Southeast Operational Zone.

This technical error, he said, prevented the upload of the appropriate candidate responses and contributed to the widespread difference in score. In an effort to restore trust, Jamb organizes re -examination for affected candidates.
