Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has revealed that he will resign from the 2027 Presidential Race if his political party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), can produce a younger, enthusiastic and acceptable candidate for elections.
Atiku, who made an appointment in an interview with BBC Hausa service on Wednesday on the occasion of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day, said his intention to run for the 2027 Presidential Race should not stop anyone, especially young people, from running.
The former presidential candidate from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general election stated that he had encouraged Nigerian youth to join the race to save Nigeria, while ensuring that he would provide maximum support to them and guide them about ways that could produce success.
Atiku, who also denied claiming that he really wanted to be Nigerian president, stressed that he was only interested in saving Nigeria from people who had taken the country hostage.
“If ADC can present a young, enthusiastic and acceptable candidate for the selection of 2027, I am willing to resign to individuals like that,” said Atiku.
Continuing, Presidential Candidate Veteran said:
“In addition, that is one of the reasons we established ADC, which I am a member. We cannot achieve it with the Democratic Party of the People’s (PDP) because the ruling APC government has decided to use several party leaders to thwart efforts to have a strong opposition that can challenge the government.
“As the day passed, the crisis in the PDP grew, and the hope to resolve it quickly disappeared because some senior party members were allegedly used by the government to further confuse the party, and we could see that in their actions and words.
“I can take some strong decisions to improve the party if I am the chairman or party secretary, or someone who listens to me is the chairman or secretary. Unfortunately, people who occupy a different interests that are mostly personal for them.
“Regarding ADC, our goal is to build party structures at the state level. We have set national party leadership, and they are trying to ensure the structure of the state and local government is strengthened and ready for the 2027 election,” he said.
