The Labor Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 election admits that he is not intimidated by the number of governors who are now under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Obi has insisted that he will contest the 2027 presidential election, despite efforts by some political actors to prevent him from running.
He spoke on Friday in Nimo, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State during an empowerment program organized by the member representing Dunukofia/Njikoka/Anaocha Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, George Ozodinobi.
Speaking further, Obi who recently confirmed his membership in the newly formed African Democratic Congress (ADC) by voting for a membership card, explained that his decision to leave the Labor Party came after a prolonged leadership dispute within the party.
According to him, court rulings repeatedly favored his faction, but the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) initially refused to recognize the rulings.
He said, “You all know that I am now in the ADC. People asked me why I left the Labor Party, but I told them that we had been tried over the leadership issue and had got a favorable decision. However, INEC refused to recognize us.
“But when I left on December 31, 2025, they acknowledged the same order they had previously rejected.”

The former Anambra governor also alleged that the ongoing constitutional adjustments were partly aimed at preventing him from running for president.
However, he challenged the ruling party to ensure a transparent election process in 2027.
Obi said; “They (APC) now have about 30 governors. Let them hold free and fair elections and see who wins.
“I want to announce to all of you that whatever they do, I have to contest the election. Let them declare a free and fair contest, take the ball to the middle of the field and call it kick-off, and let’s see what happens.”
He also lamented the current state of his country, and described Nigeria as a country in dire need of redemption.
According to him, the state system collapsed because of greed and inequality.
“Nigeria has really gone downhill, and there is a need to make up for it. I have never given up hope of becoming President; on the contrary, I am eager to see Nigeria succeed,” said Obi.
He further criticized the attitude of some rich people who, according to him, were still fighting over the benefits of empowerment intended for less fortunate people.
“This country is skewed towards the poor, and that is why we are seeking the presidency. We want a country where anyone’s child can become someone without knowing anyone,” he added.
Obi also commended Ozodinobi for organizing the empowerment program, noting that the initiative underscores the importance of electing credible leaders to public office.
