A youth group known as Omenuko Ndigbo United has raised concerns on how Peter Obi, candidate for the presidency of the Labor Party in 2023, is behaving in the current plans to unite the opposition parties for the 2027 elections.
In a statement released on Thursday in Owerri, signed by the president of the group, his partner Benjamin Madu, said that Obi is not showing a real interest in working with other opposition leaders to challenge the APC in power.
“We are not happy with Peter Obi. Instead of joining the hands with others to save Nigeria, it seems to be concentrated only on itself. It is not the moment of selfish politics,” said the group.
They accused Obi of repeating what he did in 2023, when his actions contributed to dividing the opposition and made it easy to win APC.
According to the group, the 2027 elections are very important for IGBO people and this time they must not make any mistakes.
“The current president is from the South. This is the best time for Ndigbo to push for the presidency. But we need unity. If Obi leaves the coalition, it will be more difficult for a IGBO person to become president in 2027 or even in 2031,” they warned.
They also wondered if Obi could secretly work to help APC and President Tinubu, stating that his silence and lack of involvement in the coalition are suspicious.
“Obi is not part of the plans and is starting to seem that he is playing another game. We have to know what he really wants,” they said.
They added that recent Obi attacks by APC supporters such as Reno Omokri remind them of similar tricks used in the last elections to create confusion. They also said that journalist David Hundeyin had warned the opposition not to repeat past errors.
The group asked Peter Obi to go out and clearly say whether he wants to join the coalition or not.
“The Nigerians deserve honesty. Peter Obi should stop pretending and telling us where he is. We will not allow what happened in 2023 that will happen again, especially if he damages the cause of Igbo,” they concluded.
