23 Nigerian athletes vying for medals as Paralympics kick off

A group of 23 Nigerian athletes are set to compete for medals as the Paris 2024 Paralympics kick off with a sensational opening ceremony at the Place de la Concorde on Wednesday, August 28.

As the 17th Paralympics gets underway, these athletes will face off against some of the world’s best in 549 events across 22 sports.

The Nigerian team entered the competition with high hopes, led by flag bearer Lauritta Onye during a dazzling parade.

The Nigerian contingent consists of five track and field athletes, two badminton athletes, nine weightlifters and eight table tennis athletes.

Supported by seven coaches and five medical personnel, they are ready to fight to reach the podium and bring honor to their country.

With a history of excellence, Nigeria has won 80 Paralympic medals since its first appearance in 1992, including 40 gold, 19 silver and 21 bronze.

This impressive haul is in stark contrast to the 27 Olympic medals the country has won since 1952.

The 2024 Paris Paralympics, which will run until September 8, offer these athletes a chance to shine and reclaim Nigeria’s sporting glory after a disappointing medal-less showing at the recent Paris Olympics.

Now, the focus is fully on this group of Paralympic athletes, who are ready to compete for medals and bring glory to their country once again.
