2,600 Nigerians were killed in a ben attack in 12 months – Amnesty International

The global human rights organization, Amnesty International, has increased alarm about what is described as a wave of violence in the state of benue where around 2,600 people were killed in different attacks in just 12 months.

In a statement by Amnesty International Nigeria, the organization said the new investigation had revealed “disturbing violent trends in the state of Benue, where 2600 people, most women and children, have been killed in attacks on 50 communities between January 2023 and February 2024.”

In a statement posted on his page X on Wednesday, the Human Rights Agency said the situation of insecurity in the state also had “a destroying impact on education, with at least 55 schools destroyed or closed, leaving hundreds of children out of school.”

“The attack, which was carried out by armed bandits, not only resulted in a significant loss of lives but also had displaced thousands of families, leaving them without access to basic needs,” the organization said.

“Our investigation shows that a total of 2,600 people, most women and children, were killed after attacks on 50 benue communities between January 2023 and February 2024.

“In addition to displacing thousands of families, at least 55 schools have been destroyed by armed bandits or closed due to insecurity, leaving hundreds of children out of school.”

In its recommendations, the organization assigns the Nigerian government and related authority to take immediate action to overcome the root of the cause of violence and ensure the safety and welfare of its citizens.

“This is a clear reminder of the cost of human insecurity in the region and the need for sustainable efforts to promote peace, stability, and human rights,” he added.
