40 percent of Nigerians now enjoy 20 hours of electricity every day, Adelabu claims

In a bold announcement on Sunday, Chief Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu declared a significant leap in Nigeria’s electricity supply, revealing that more than 40% of the population now benefits from electricity that is on for up to 20 hours every day.

This achievement achieved in just one year, according to Adelabu, shows the impact of strategic reforms undertaken by the ministry under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.

β€œThe greatest achievement is the fact that we are currently generating over 5,500 megawatts of electricity,” Adelabu said. β€œWe transmit and distribute it, and more than 40% of customers currently enjoy regular electricity supply for more than 20 hours across the country. You can see that there has been significant improvement between when we arrived and now, which we want to improve further.”

Adelabu highlighted the ministry’s initiatives, designed to align with President Tinubu’s New Hope Agenda, which seeks to encourage industrial growth through reliable electricity supply. He emphasized the important role of stable electricity in driving economic success, and this is in line with developed countries.

β€œThis is why we say that we must achieve this for Nigeria as a country,” he stressed, underscoring the vision of consistent access to electricity to empower households and businesses.

Since the current administration took office, installed power generation capacity has increased from 13,000 megawatts to more than 14,000 megawatts, a transformation made possible by new hydroelectric projects and upgrades to existing facilities. “Our installed capacity reached more than 14,000 megawatts of electricity due to the addition of the newly commissioned Zungeru hydroelectric power plant and the increase in capacity of several existing power plants,” he explained.

Adelabu detailed a series of strategic steps aimed at revitalizing the electricity sector, including the recent signing of the Electricity Law of 2023, which decentralizes and liberalizes operations in the industry. He pointed to the establishment of a strong policy framework designed to improve market performance and liquidity.

β€œThe electricity we enjoy today is not a coincidence. “This is thanks to all the transformers and mobile substations that we commissioned and installed,” he said, highlighting infrastructure improvements as critical to the progress achieved.

In addition, the ministry is also addressing the metering deficit through the Presidential Metering Initiative, with plans to install more than 10 million meters within five years. World Bank support through the Distribution Recovery Program further supports these efforts.

Looking to the future, Adelabu expressed confidence in Nigeria’s electricity landscape: β€œEventually, the majority of our population will have electricity, industry will enjoy stable electricity, and this will increase production and create jobs for our people. people.”
