5 died in Italy because of the heat wave paralyzing Southern Europe

At least five people have been reported dead in Italy because extreme heat continues to affect the parts of southern Europe.

The temperature has exceeded 30 degrees Celsius in Sicilia at 10:00 am (0800 GMT) on Wednesday.

Türkiye and Greece also experienced high temperatures, with the city of Türkiye Istanbul reaching 36 degrees Celsius and Greek Island Lesbos 38 degrees Celsius at the same time.

In Athens, Acropolis and other popular ancient sites must be closed during midday hours.

Employees shipping services, construction workers and agricultural workers have also been instructed to stop working.

Greek law requires such steps to work outdoors when the temperature rises above 40 degrees Celsius, as expected on Wednesday and in the coming days.

The doctor has warned that parents and small children in particular should not spend time outdoors, that people must drink a lot of water and avoid alcohol.

Italian authorities said there were at least five deaths in the South Apulia region in the last few days that could be related to high temperatures.

In Palermo, the capital of Sicilia, the highest heat warning rate applies.

Hot warnings also exist in more than a dozen other cities.

The high pressure area from Africa, named Kamel meteorologists, is expected to carry temperatures up to 45 degrees Celsius in southern Italy.

Türkiye also groaned under the heat.

On Tuesday, a temperature of more than 40 degrees Celsius was recorded in six of the 81 provinces of the country, and the temperature is expected to rise higher on Wednesday.

The heat is exacerbated by drought, which allows forest fires to spread faster.
