Barnsley Football Club have announced the signing of 26-year-old Nigerian international midfielder Kelechi Nwakali from relegated Portuguese side GD Chavez on a three-year contract, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
“We are delighted to confirm the signing of Nigerian international midfielder Kelechi Nwakali from GD Chaves for an undisclosed fee subject to visa and international clearance,” read a statement on the club’s official website.
The League One side will be hoping he can help them to promotion after a disappointing campaign last time out, in which they finished 17th. They have long been interested in the Nigerian.
In 2015, after winning the award for best player at the U-17 World Cup, Nwakali joined Arsenal, but left the club three years ago after failing to meet the necessary conditions. He spent two years at Spanish side Huesca before terminating his contract in 2021 due to indiscipline.
He returned late from international duty with Nigeria at the African Cup of Nations. He signed for Portuguese club Chavez last season and was fined by the club after he was photographed using his phone on the bench after being substituted during the match that sealed their triumph.egation.
