A source in the Sports Ministry says Minister Senator John Enoh is favourably disposed to the idea of Samson Siasia taking over as the new coach of the Super Eagles after his ban expires, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
Siasia’s ban for alleged match-fixing has expired and with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) yet to choose a replacement for Finidi George who left office six weeks ago, the minister’s group has proposed to the NFF the idea of hiring Siasia.
We have learned exclusively that the minister vetoed the idea of signing Eric Chelle or Tom Saintfeit insisting that they are no better than Siasia, who in his words was a victim of circumstances and deserves a second chance with the Super Eagles.
If he has his way, the 57-year-old will return to the job he held twice before, but on both occasions failed to qualify for the African Cup of Nations. However, he is considered one of Nigeria’s most successful coaches and is widely respected and loved.
His exploits with the 2005 U-20 team, where they went all the way before losing in the final to a Lionel Messi-inspired agent, won him the hearts of Nigeria. This was followed by a silver and bronze medal at the 2008 and 2016 Olympic football events respectively with the U-23 team.
