The troops arrested the main suspect in the abduction of the Kaduna Catholic Imam

The Safe Haven Operations Forces (Opsh) have arrested the main suspect in the abduction of a priest attached to the Catholic Diocese of Kafachan, Kaduna State, Rev. Fr. Sylvester Okechukwu.

Okechukwu was kidnapped on March 4 at his residence in Tachira, the Kaura Regional Government in the state by a group of armed people.

He was later found dead on March 5.

The suspect, who spoke to reporters when he was paraded at the oph headquarters) on Thursday in JOS, the State of the highlands, said he was masterminding the abduction of the ulama because he needed the N200,000 to solve personal problems.

The suspect helped the detectives to uncover the cause of the incident and how to arrest other suspects now in escape.

The suspect, who said he invited other criminals from other places to complete the assignment, denied asking his colleagues to kill Imam.

He said: “Fr. Okechukwu lives in our house in Tachira and I master the abduction because I need N200,000 to solve personal problems.

“I invited several people (colleagues) from other places to help me complete the mission but I did not ask them to kill him.

“I don’t know why they killed him. I wasn’t with them because I then left them with a priest.”

Another suspect, the name detained, who was also detained at the Opsh, said that the head of the suspect had called him to help him to actualize the crime.

“Initially, I refused to be part of the agreement, but the main suspect insisted. We grew up in the same community.

“So, on that date I left my place in Warsa-Piti in Lere Lga and participated in the abduction of the priest.

“He really contacted other people from Bokkos in the highlands who came with weapons; after we took the priest and walked a little far, we left him with them.

“So, we cannot say how and why they are suspected of killing the priest,” he said.

An oph official said the suspects were arrested on Tuesday, following the raids conducted at a settlement in the Warsa-Piti community in Lere.
