NNPC To continue oil drilling in North Nigeria, Gceo Ojulari confirmed

Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) will continue the crude oil drilling activity in Northern Nigeria more than two years after the initial launch of the collism project was deferred.

This announcement was made by the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) from NNPC Ltd., Mr. Bayo Ojulari, during an interview with BBC News Hausa on Monday.

The Kolmani project, which is located on the border between Bauchi and Gombe countries, was first inaugurated in November 2022 under the government of the former President of Muhammadu Buhari. At that time, it was praised as a historic step towards turning the northern region into a new oil border. However, drilling activities stopped without public explanation, making many residents disappointed.

Ojulari, who was just taking the leadership of the national oil company, said that efforts were being carried out to revive the jammed project. “We will continue oil drilling in the collusion and other places,” he said, convincing the northern community that the Federal government remained committed to developing energy potential in the region.

He added that the start of returning will also include the long-awaited completion of the Gasokuta-Kano Pipeline Pipe, a critical infrastructure project that is expected to increase industrial activities throughout the north. “This initiative will help reopen a closed business and encourage new formation, eventually improving regional and national economy,” Ojulari said.

When speaking with skepticism that followed his appointment, Ojulari, he was a North, urged the public to support his leadership. “It surprised me that some northern people were not happy with my meeting. I urged all people – north and south – to support me with their prayers and cooperation so that we could advance this country,” he said.

Ojulari also confirmed that NNPC Ltd. is working to improve its tense relationship with dangote oil refineries. Tensions have increased between the two parties over the supply of crude oil, with the NNPC administration previously stopped the controversial Naira-For-Frude agreement earlier this year. This step triggers the problem of supply and price fluctuations throughout the country.

“We admit that there is disagreement, but we have sat and decided to work together in the future,” Ojulari said. “Mr. Aliko Dangote has shown a praiseworthy will to collaborate, and we have agreed to end the competition for a greater good than the Nigerians.”

He stressed the importance of synergy between two main energy stakeholders to ensure consistent fuel availability at the overall energy filling and safety station. “If the challenge arises, we will overcome it peacefully. There will be no more disputes,” he convinced.

Commenting on the country’s economic situation, Ojulari noted that the decline in global oil prices had significantly affected Nigeria’s income. He acknowledged that a budget projection based on higher oil prices has failed but emphasizes that cutting operational costs can help bridge the gap.

“If we can manage our operational costs efficiently, income from oil and gas sales can still meet our national needs,” he said.
