… says the federal legislator with 2 rooms too expensive
… outlaw to be crossed by elected officials
… validate the independent candidacy, vote of the diaspora
The national summit organized by the Patriots offered those that indicated “clear, constructive and principle remedies for the pressing constitutional crises and governance of Nigeria”.
According to Patriots, the 1999 Constitution did not derive its legitimacy from the popular participation and approval of the Nigerian people.
In a press release read on Friday by the Converse and the former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, the head Emeka Anyaku, the summit agreed that the Constitution of 1999 (as amended) was deeply imperfect and not representative.
Anyaoku noticed that the Constitution was not made by the people and, therefore, was inadequate for having faced the pluralism of the country and the various challenges that faced it as a nation.
He said that the delegates “therefore agreed that there was the need for a new democratic constitution led by people, inclusive and democratic anchored to true federalism”.
“In order to implement the aforementioned and other reforms agreed on this summit, the delegates agreed that the president was required to introduce an executive bill to the National Assembly to enhance the National Electoral Commission (INC) to organize the elections in a national constituent assembly.
“This assembly must consist of elected delegates on a non -partisan basis and representatives of groups of special interest
“The Constituent Assembly will be responsible for the implementation of the democratic constitution of a people who will be subjected to a referendum of the Nigerian people before they are hired by the president of the midwife of a democratic constitution of the people,” he said.
Other resolutions of the summit included: “That the current presidential government system is too expensive, inclined to abuse; constitutes an obstacle to the well -being of people and a serious threat to the future of democracy in Nigeria.
“Fling from the above resolutions, the summit has solved that the current six geopolitical areas should be renovated in such a way as to guarantee a truly federal system of government.”
Two -chamber legislative surveys
Anyaoku also said that “the summit has agreed that a two -chamber federal legislator is unsustainablely expensive for Nigeria to be maintained; therefore, he recommended a more appropriate system in terms of costs”.
“Among other reforms, the summit has therefore solved that all the elections will be conducted in a single day, since this is cheaper, saving and less inclined to fraud. Brazil and Ghana are good examples of countries that have adopted one -day elections.
Independent candidacy
The Patriots believed that the new Constitution should include the provision for the independent candidacy for aspirants who “do not wish to apply for the elections on the basis of the party”. “
“The summit recommends that once a person is elected on the platform of a political party, he will not have to defect for another political party until the mandate is finished. Where this happens, this location must be declared vacant automatically and unconditionally and this person must immediately seize to keep the office.”
Nigeriani in Diaspora
The Nigerians in the diaspora over the years have complained of without voting and exclusion from the voting process.
“Currently, the statistics have put the figure of the Nigerians in the diaspora at over 15 million, yet these Nigerians are excluded from the voting process, despite their enormous contributions to economic development through the details of the diaspora.
“The summit recommends the establishment of a legal framework that will guarantee the civic rights of this class of Nigerians to participate in the democratic process”.
