Nepal: Timi Frank demands the reform of the Nigerian electoral system

A former Deputy Secretary of the National Publicity of the Congress of All Progressive (APC), Timi Frank, has warned that Nigeria can face such riots now in Nepal if the 2027 General Election is not credible.

Frank, who raised the concern in a statement on Monday, urged the Independent National Election Commission (INEC) to implement reforms ahead of the election to ensure credible polls and prevent rebellions that could bring countless consequences in the country.

His statement followed the “Gen-Z” which triggered protests in Nepal, which caused the deaths of more than 72 people, including red government, home and other buildings during anti-corruption protests.

Violence in Asian countries has been described as the deadliest political riots in several decades and erupted when most young Nepal switched to the paths of Kathmandu and other cities last week to force Prime Minister Khadga Sharma Oli to resign last Tuesday.

When issuing a warning, Frank stressed that Inec, Judicial, and security institutions, as well as other democratic institutions in the country, have a critical role in upholding the rule of law and preventing similar riots in Nigeria.

He also urged APC to stop attacking, intimidating, and harassing opposition leaders in the country.

“This brave and positive action should not stand alone. When this nation looks forward for the 2027 general election,
Inec must replicate the spirit of independence and the same courage in the overall behavior of the poll, “said the activist.

“Now the new leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been recognized by Inec, we urge Nigerians not to be confident and support him as a party that will change Nigeria for the better and ensure freedom and prosperity for all. We also urge Nigerians to be ready to vote and defend their voices in 2027.”

He also asked Inec to implement vital reform ahead of elections to ensure a free, fair and credible election, emphasizing that without urgent reform and ethical leadership by the Election and Security Institution, Nigeria is likely to face the risk of violence and high political instability with #Endsars Protest in 2020.

“Security bodies must not take sides and stop their usual roles in cheating elections for the ruling parties. They must protect voters and prevent political violence. Failure to do it at risk of encouraging Nigeria into a worse situation than the new Nepal riots, given our challenges with poverty and tyranny,” he stressed.
