An expert warns students against over-reliance on artificial intelligence

An information and communications technology (ICT) expert, Abiona Solomon, has warned students against over-reliance on artificial intelligence (AI), urging them to embrace practice and independent thinking in their academic work.

Solomon, CEO of Solo InfoTech, gave the advice on Saturday in Ilorin during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said many students rely heavily on artificial intelligence tools to manage their research and classwork, a trend he noted discourages critical thinking.

According to him, the growing use of artificial intelligence has made some students reluctant to engage their intellect, thus promoting laziness.

“Many students now look for shortcuts to complete their homework and no longer challenge themselves intellectually due to the availability of artificial intelligence.

“This trend affects all levels of education, as students increasingly rely on artificial intelligence instead of forcing themselves to think independently.

“Students should be encouraged to be self-sufficient and always attempt to solve problems themselves before turning to AI.

“Overreliance on artificial intelligence can weaken their ability to think critically,” he said.

Solomon, however, acknowledged that AI remains a valuable tool for learning, noting that it is vast and facilitates research.

He added that AI has simplified academic work and exposed students to global developments.

The expert, therefore, advised students to use AI responsibly and not abuse its benefits.
