The Enugu State Police have arrested 24-year-old Desmond Ugwu for alleged attempted murder and rape of a pregnant woman in Affa community, Udi LGA.
This is contained in a statement issued on Sunday in Enugu by the command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe.
Ndukwe said the 30-year-old victim, whose name was withheld, had taken a short walk home from a neighbour’s house on March 14.
He said the familiar route was a quiet road in Amokwo-Affa, Udi LGA.
He added: “But what should have been a routine return turned into a terrifying ordeal.
“Unaware that she was being followed, she was suddenly attacked from behind by the suspect, who was armed with a sabre.
“He forced her to the ground, grabbed her neck in an attempt to strangle her and covered her mouth to silence her screams.
“She was then dragged into an unfinished building, where he threatened to kill her if she resisted before forcibly raping her.”
Ndukwe said the victim reported the incident at around 6.15am on March 15, prompting swift police action.

He said officers from the Affa Police Division promptly mobilized and arrested the suspect.
The spokesperson said the victim was immediately taken to hospital for medical checks and treatment.
“The scene was analysed, leading to the recovery of the artefacts, including the cutlass and clothing which had suspected blood and semen stains.
“The suspect confessed, while the police commissioner, Mamman Giwa, ordered a thorough investigation,” Ndukwe said.
He added that the suspect will be promptly arraigned in court upon completion of the investigation.
The commissioner described the incident as deeply disturbing and unacceptable, reaffirming the command’s resolve to ensure justice.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements, stressing that community awareness could mean the difference between safety and tragedy.
