GFA fires Otto Addo as Black Stars head coach

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has removed Otto Addo as coach of the Ghana men’s national team.

The decision is surprising as it comes just three months before the FIFA World Cup.

Addo’s dismissal was confirmed in an official statement, which reads:

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with the head coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo, with immediate effect. The Association would like to thank Otto Addo and his assistants for their services to Ghanaian football and wish them the best in their future endeavours. The GFA will announce a new technical direction for the Black Stars in due course.”

The decision comes after Ghana’s 2-1 loss to Germany at the MHP Arena in Stuttgart, marking the team’s fourth consecutive defeat.

Reports suggest that the tough 5-1 loss to Austria also played a role in the GFA’s decision.

Despite the recent poor run of form, Addo played a key role in Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, recording six wins and one draw during the campaign.

He also guided the team to qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

In total, Addo managed 22 matches, recording eight wins, five draws and nine losses (a win rate of 36.4 percent).
