“Rewarding athletes motivates us to keep trying” – Rafiatu after record-breaking Commonwealth Games gold

Nigeria’s Rafiatu Folashade Lawal says recognizing and rewarding athletes for their achievements provides the motivation needed to continue striving for excellence after retaining her Commonwealth Games women’s 58kg weightlifting title in record fashion.

Lawal put in another dominant performance in Glasgow, lifting a combined 229kg to set a new Commonwealth Games record and successfully defend the gold medal she won at the Birmingham 2022 Games. Her victory also took Team Nigeria’s gold medal total at the current Games to six.

Reflecting on her achievement, the champion highlighted that recognition and support for athletes plays a crucial role in inspiring them to perform at the highest level.

“Many of us play sports because we want to achieve something meaningful in life. Knowing that athletes are being rewarded motivates us to keep trying.”

The Nigerian weightlifter also highlighted the immense sacrifice behind each medal, noting that success on the international stage is only achieved through years of dedication and hard work.

“Every athlete dreams of getting on the podium, but it requires sacrifice, discipline and determination.”

Lawal, who credited the support of her teammates, the Nigerian Weightlifting Federation and the National Sports Commission for helping her stay focused, said her latest success would only fuel her desire to achieve even greater feats.

With another Commonwealth Games title secured and a new Games record to her name, the Nigerian star has now turned her attention to future international competitions, expressing confidence that hard work and continued commitment can lead to Olympic success.
