Lavrov calls for a new Eurasian ‘security architecture’

Quoting President Vladimir Putin, Lavrov said “the dictatorship of a single hegemon has run amok and is dangerous for everyone around him,” arguing that a more just and multipolar order is emerging as countries in the Global South and East assert themselves as “sovereign centers of development.”

Lavrov condemned the seizure of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife earlier this year, and their “extrajudicial detention” in the US, and called for their immediate release.

He also condemned the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with members of his family and the military and political leadership, as an “unacceptable manifestation of coercive diktat.”

He said the broader US-Israel campaign had also attacked Iran’s nuclear facilities under the agreement IAEA security measures, causing “irreparable damage” to the non-proliferation system overseen by the UN-backed nuclear energy watchdog.

Regarding Gaza, Lavrov said this Security Council-The 20-point US-backed peace plan has not resulted in peace, with the elderly, women and children still being killed while the humanitarian situation remains “critical.”

Turning to the occupied West Bank and the expansion of Israeli settlements, he warned that “If this continues, it will become impossible to establish a Palestinian State. There will be no land left for it.”

He called for urgent and “unconventional” international action against Palestine as well as Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Iraq, Sudan, Somalia and South Sudan – and repeated Russia’s call to lift the strict US blockade of Cuba.

Ukraine and the West

Lavrov accused European governments of arming Ukraine and helping it attack civilians, saying they were trying to hinder peace talks that “many people,” including the Trump administration in Washington, are interested in.

Marking 80 years since the Nuremberg trials ended after the defeat of Nazi Germany, he said the lessons had not been learned by everyone, and accused European Union governments of tolerating what he called “Ukrainian Nazism” while restricting the Russian language.

“Our struggle for truth and justice will be carried out until the end,” he said. “The objectives of the special military operation will be achieved, threats to Russia’s security will be eliminated, and peaceful life will be restored.”

Security Council and AI

Lavrov said Security Council reform should not create new seats for Germany or Japan, which he said had “embarked on the path of militarization and revanchism,” and supported permanent seats for Brazil and India as well as greater African representation.

He welcomed the UN Convention against Cybercrime, developed on Russia’s initiative and signed in Hanoi last October, as well as the new global mechanism established to implement it. On artificial intelligence, he referred to the Global Dialogue on AI Governance and the China-led, Russia-backed, proposal to establish a global AI cooperation body.

Multipolar future

Lavrov said lasting peace requires “strict adherence” to the principle of equal and indivisible security, and accused NATO of expanding its reach into Southeast and Northeast Asia.

He announced that Russia, Belarus and “like-minded partners” had adopted a statement in New York launching a draft Eurasian Charter on Diversity and Multipolarity in the 21st Century, inviting others to help build what he called “a new architecture of peace and development across the continent.”
