Hosts Germany were knocked out as Spain won after extra time to advance to the Euro semi-finals

Spain advanced to the semi-finals of the European Championship after beating hosts Germany in the last eight on Friday night.

The Spanish team performed spectacularly in the tournament, having achieved three wins from the group stage against Italy, Croatia and Albania.

They beat giant killers Georgia in the last 16, and now beat hosts and giants Germany in extra time.

Spain had led 1-0 in the 51st minute through Dani Olmo before Germany forced the match into extra time with an 89th-minute equaliser through Florian Wirtz.

Mikel Merino then scored the winner in the 119th minute to seal the win and send his side into the last four of the European Championship.

Spain defenders Robin le Normand and Dani Carvajal are both suspended for the semi-final against France or Portugal.

France and Portugal will meet in the other quarter-final on Friday.
