Ichor Tersagh, the visiting professor at Benue State University (BSU) who was filmed beating a male “student” who entered his classroom, has fought back.
A video of the attack that took place on Friday, July 12, has gone viral and sparked outrage among viewers (read here).
Reacting on his Facebook page, Ichor Tersagh wrote: “I would like to clarify the allegations in this way:
“As scheduled in the class schedule, I gave a class to 300 undergraduate students (MCB 311 – Soil Microbiology) in one of the large lecture halls, codenamed TLT A.
“The challenge that is often encountered when holding classes in a large room is the influx of students and operators who have nothing to do with the course and who, for various reasons, cross the room for the lessons in progress, hindering the lesson and distracting both the teacher and the students.
“This scenario was repeated and was more intense on that fateful day when I had to suspend class and I begged them to at least stop walking in front of the classroom where I was with the students and to use the back if what they wanted to do had to be done by the end of the class.
“In one of the videos, the impression created by the person present was that he had objects on the other side of the room to pick up and not those of a student. Because preventing him from going to the front but at least following him from the back of the room while classes were in progress proved to be a failure.
“Surprisingly, the video did not cover a substantial portion of the interaction and was muted so that the jokes and laughter would give the impression of aggression as intended by the perpetrators. The identity of the person is still covered, including his Faculty, Department, level, names and no ID with him for identification.
“Students who had business to attend to with the class were already seated for the lecture that had lasted more than fifty minutes, despite the obstacles of the massive influx of people passing through the room, making it difficult to create a controlled classroom environment in which teaching and learning could proceed smoothly.
“SECOND VIDEO
“If the video had not been muted and with background music, you could have heard our dialogue warning him that what he wanted was impossible with me and that he should stop distracting us in a class/course he had nothing to do with and the joke that followed about the baptism of meaning.
“There is a cartel of people, some of whom are not students at the university, with ties to social media activists who promote illegal trafficking in an attempt to compromise faculty on campus.
“The boldness with which he approached me in the middle of class, in my opinion, was to demonstrate to some students the relentless attempts he was making to get to me. If it had been with any form of identification, the matter would have been reported from the moment he began the advances.
“The biggest challenge is why the identity of the said person without any form of identification; Faculty, course/Department is not yet revealed to even achieve the intended mission of aggression when I even jokingly gave him what I called sense baptism, we laughed and he left. If his identity is revealed, one will wonder what brought him right in front of the hall when he had nothing to do with the lecture that was going on.
“Finally sir, the university authority should prevent street trading in and around the classrooms and limit all forms of trading to the labor market. The use of identity cards by students should be mandatory to help security and faculty properly identify students and report if a situation requires it.
