Onuachu returns to Southampton for pre-season

Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu has rejoined Southampton for pre-season training but his future at the club remains in doubt.

Southampton manager Russell Martin has expressed his delight at having Onuachu back in the squad but acknowledged there is uncertainty over the striker’s long-term prospects with the club.

Onuachu spent last season on loan at Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor, where he impressed by scoring 17 goals in 25 appearances.

Trabzonspor are interested in retaining the prolific striker, raising questions over his future at Southampton.

Speaking to the Southampton Echo, Martin hinted that Onuachu is likely to leave the Saints for good this summer.

β€œPaul is back with us after an extended break,” Martin said.

β€œHe had a brilliant season in Turkey, at a club that now has a lot of affection for him. So we will have to wait and see what happens.”

The Nigerian international joined Southampton in January 2023 but struggled to make an impact, failing to score in his 11 appearances for the club.
