A aggressive prostate carcinoma was diagnosed in Biden

Former president Joe Biden has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, said his office on Sunday. Last week Biden was seen by doctors after the urinary symptoms and a lump of the prostate.

On Friday he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, with cancer cells that spread to the bone.

“Although this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, cancer seems to be sensitive to hormones that allows effective management,” said its office.

“The president and his family are examining the therapeutic options with his doctors.”

Prostate tumors are classified for aggression using what is known as a Gleason score. The scores range from 6 to 10, with prostate tumors 8, 9 and 10 that behave more aggressively.

Biden’s office said that his score was 9, suggesting that his cancer is among the most aggressive.

When prostate cancer spreads to other parts of the body, it often spreads to the bones.

Metastatized cancer is much more difficult to treat than localized cancer because it can be difficult for drugs to reach all tumors and completely eradicate the disease.

However, when prostate tumors need hormones to grow, as in the case of biden, they can be susceptible to the treatment that deprives hormone tumors.

The results have improved in recent decades and patients may expect to live with metastatic prostate cancer for four or five years, said dr. Matthew Smith of the General Brigham Cancer Center of Massachusetts.

“It’s very well -kept, but not curable,” Smith said.

“Most men in this situation would be treated with drugs and it is not recommended to undergo surgery or radiotherapy.”

Many political leaders have sent Biden their wishes for their healing.

President Donald Trump, a long -standing political opponent, published on social media that he is saddened by the news and “we wish Joe a rapid and successful recovery”.

The vice -president of Biden, Kamala Harris, said on social media that he was keeping him in the “hearts and prayers of his family during this period”.

“Joe is a fighter – and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership,” Harris wrote.

The health of Biden, 82, was a dominant concern among the voters during his president’s period. After a performance of a calamitous debate in June while looking for the re -election, Biden abandoned his offer for a second term. Harris became the candidate and lost against Trump, a republican who returned to the White House after a four -year break.

But in the last few days, Biden has rejected the concerns for his age despite the complaint in the new book “Original Sin” by Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson that the assistants had protected the public from the measure of his decline while needed as president.

In February 2023, Biden had a skin injury removed from his chest which was a basal cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer. In November 2021, he had a polyp removed by his colon which was a benign but potentially pre-changing injury.

In 2022, Biden made a “cancer moon pole” one of the priorities of his administration with the aim of halving the mortality rate from cancer in the next 25 years.

The initiative was a continuation of his work as vice -president to face a disease that had killed his eldest son, Beau, who died of brain cancer in 2015.

His father, when he announced the goal of halving the mortality rate for cancer, said that this could be an “American moment to demonstrate to ourselves and, frankly, to the world that we can really do great things”. [AP]
