A court to hear the Diezani lawsuit challenged the confiscation of assets on June 30

Judge Musa Umar from the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Friday set June 30 for a lawsuit session filed by the former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Mateke, challenged the confiscation of his assets by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC).

At the hearing that was continued on this issue, Alison-Mugeke was represented by Mr. Godwin Iyinbor from Prof. Mike Ozekhome (San), but EFCC does not have representatives in court.

Inyinbor told Justice Umar that Judge Inyang Ekwo, who handled the issue before, had said that on the last postponement date that every party that prevented a definite hearing about the problem on the next postponement will pay the fee.

Judge Umar, however, said that because he was not the one who made the statement, the commission must be given another opportunity to appear in court.

He ordered the trial notification to be issued and postponed this problem on June 30 for hearing.

In a lawsuit marked by FHC/ABJ/CS/21/2023, which began in 2023, Alison-Mateke prayed that the court extended the time to put up aside the EFCC public notification issued for the sale of its property.

In his proposal, he argued that the order for confiscation of assets was made without jurisdiction.

The former minister believes that he was rejected by a fair trial in a process that led to confiscation.

He asked five orders from the court, including the cancellation of the EFCC public notification about the sale of its property.

He argued that various court orders issued supported EFCC violating their constitutional rights for a fair session as enshrined in section 36 (1) of the 1999 constitution.
