“The uncertainty surrounding Stanley during pre-season has been the worst nightmare for us,” Kopo said.

β€œStanley hadn’t been himself at the beginning of the preseason because of all this talk that there’s interest in [from] this club and that club”.

He continued: β€œLike any other player, Stanley would like to progress to a higher level, not only in competition but also financially. So the uncertainty was like a rollercoaster.

β€œWe were also very nervous about finding a replacement because it was going to be very difficult for us as we felt we wouldn’t find the same calibre locally to replace Stanley.”

Kopo also praised Nwabali’s commitment to Chippa United after the goalkeeper decided to extend his contract.

“We have spoken to him and he is committed and that is reflected in the contract extension. He is happy to continue at the club and wants to play,” said the coach.

β€œYes, he still has the ambition to progress and, as a club, we also have those hopes for him, but like the president [Siviwe Mpengesi] β€œIt has to come at the right time and on the right terms,” Kopo concluded.

International duties and new season

Nwabali is currently with the Nigeria national team and is aiming to be in top form when the Premier Soccer League (PSL) season kicks off on September 20.
