ABS Ilorin FC beats Sokoto United to overcome drop in dramatic final

ABS Ilorin FC made a remarkable escape from relegation with a hard-fought victory over Sokoto United in a tense final day encounter at the Giginya Memorial Stadium.

Going into the decisive clash, ABS Ilorin FC faced a daunting task. Sitting in seventh place in the standings with 14 points, they needed nothing less than victory and at the same time expected City FC, who were in sixth place with 16 points, to stumble against Lobi Stars in Abuja. With survival hanging by a thread, the odds seemed to be stacked against the Saraki Boys.

Despite the pressure, ABS showed composure and determination from the start. Their breakthrough came in the 28th minute in a fortuitous manner. A miscommunication in the Sokoto United defense saw a defender attempt a routine back pass, but the goalkeeper was unable to handle it, allowing the ball to enter the net and give ABS an invaluable advantage.

Buoyed by the lead, ABS Ilorin FC maintained discipline and structure, maintaining their narrow lead until half-time. The second half, however, was a completely different test.

Sokoto United returned from the break with renewed urgency, throwing numbers forward in search of an equaliser. Wave after wave of attacks were launched against the ABS defence, but the visitors held firm. The backline, built with courage and resilience, absorbed the pressure and repelled every threat that came their way.

As the clock ticked down, tension set in but ABS Ilorin FC held their nerve to secure a crucial victory that ultimately preserved their status in the Nigerian National League.

It was a performance defined by courage, discipline and refusal to give up the qualities that ensured ABS Ilorin FC lived to fight for another season.

With City FC losing to Lobi Stars, ABS Ilorin FC finished sixth with 17 points and retained their NNL status for the upcoming season.
