Access Holdings Plc, through its banking vertical β Access Bank PLC, has announced a donation of over $1 billion to assist relief and recovery efforts in Maiduguri, following the devastating floods in the state capital of Borno.
The announcement was made during a visit by the Group delegates, led by the Acting Group Chief Executive Officer, Bolaji Agbede, to the Borno State Government House in Maiduguri on Friday, September 27, 2024.
Access Holdings said the donation aimed to provide both immediate and long-term relief to Maiduguri flood victims.
Access Holdings added that the contribution will be allocated as 500 million naira in cash to support the state government’s field response efforts, 500 million naira for the restoration of critical infrastructure damaged by the flood and essential food supplies to ensure that the most vulnerable receive care.
Speaking at the meeting, Agbede, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting the people of Borno State, reiterating its commitment to impact the lives of the communities in which the institution operates.
He said: βAt Access Holdings, we believe in positively impacting the communities we serve, not only as a financial institution but as a family that cares deeply about its people. We recognize the resilience of the people of Borno and are committed to providing the necessary support to overcome this difficult time.
βThis donation is not just about funding; It’s about providing immediate relief to affected families and individuals, while contributing to local economic recovery and long-term resilience through the restoration of essential infrastructure.”
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, who received the Access Holdings delegation, expressed appreciation for the donation and the company’s quick response to the flood incident.
Zulum said: βWe are moved by the generosity and commitment shown by Access Holdings and Access Bank during this critical time. This $1 billion donation is appreciated during this difficult time and will be used judiciously to impact the lives of all those affected by the incident.
βRestoring our hospitals and essential services will strengthen our resilience, while food aid will provide immediate comfort to families and people in need. Truly, this support demonstrates the importance of cooperation between government and the private sector in improving the lives of our local communities.β
The donation sees Access Holdings become the first mainstream financial institution to offer support to Borno State following the disaster which affected over a million people, leaving entire residential areas submerged and scores of people displaced.
