Actress Lala Akindoju shares her thoughts on a woman adopting her husband’s surname

Nollywood actress Kemi Lala Akindoju took to social media to discuss her views on marriage customs and the practice of women taking their husbands’ surnames.

Kemi, who shared her thoughts on the matter in a post on her Instagram page, said a woman should be allowed to choose whether she wants to change her name or not.

She wrote: “The Bible says that a man should cleave to a woman (but what do I know). Most importantly, a woman should be allowed to choose. Whether she wants to change her name or not or combine them.

“To be honest, if we want to follow the “2 becomes 1” principle, the couple should combine both surnames. I still question the children automatically coming from the man’s country of origin, his surname, and the fact that the man ‘owns’ the child.

“All of this really makes me dizzy, but it is women who physically experience the life-transforming process of giving birth to children.

“However, she was degraded. I may not have the answer, but it bothers my entire being and I have yet to find a scripture that says the woman must take the man’s name. The scripture says the man is bound to the woman (but what do I know).

“Most importantly, a woman should be allowed to choose. Whether she wants to change her name or not or combine them. Unfortunately, boys are never raised to think that their identity will change, but just because of the gender of a woman, she is raised/socialized to know that she should not be too comfortable with the name and identity she has known her entire life. I don’t have the answers, but I strongly question this practice.”
