Chapter of the Ogun State from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the Nigerian police to interfere with its campaign general meeting in Sagamu ahead of the election of the Federal Remo constituency on Saturday, which allegedly supported all the ruling Progressive Congress (APC).
In a statement on Thursday, the Chairman of the State of ADC, Femi Soluade, said the general meeting, led by the National Secretary of the Party and former Governor of State Osun, Rauf Aregbesola, had received previous approval from the police. He accused, however, that the event was disturbed hard, with a canopy dismantled, damaged chairs, confiscated music equipment, and armored personnel operators were deployed to intimidate candidates, leaders, and party supporters.
Furthermore Soluade claimed that the division police officers in Sagamu, accompanied by the Regional Commander, then intercepted Aregbesola, Southwest Chair of the Party, Rasq Eyiowuawi, and other senior leaders at Isale Oko, ordered them to return to Abeokuta. According to him, the police quoted the presence of Governor Dapo Abiodun and APC members in the area as a reason for the restriction.
“The reason is thin,” Soluade said. “As if the public space belonging to the ruling party. This behavior is embarrassing and unus democratic.”
ADC vowed not to be hindered by what is described as political harassment and intimidation.
“There is no damage to the chair, the confiscated instrument, or an armored tank will silence the voice of people,” Soluade said. “Police loyalty should be to the constitution, not to politicians. ADC has come to remain.”
