ADC Candidate in 20 LGA for the Election of the Lagos Council

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Saturday announced its participation in the election of the Lagos State Government Council, field candidates in all 20 regional government regions that were constitutional recognized (LGA) in accordance with the 2024 Supreme Court Court which confirmed local government autonomy.

Speaking on Saturday with the Nigerian news agency (NAN), the Chairperson of the State of ADC, George Ashiru, explained that the party’s decision was guided by the re -affirmation of the Supreme Court over 774 LGA which was enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution, including 20 recognized Lagos.

“In line with the Supreme Court’s decision on local government autonomy, we chose to focus our campaign and field candidates in only 20 regional regions that are constitutionally recognized,” Ashiru said.

Although the Lagos State Independent Election Commission (LASEC) is conducting elections throughout 20 LGA and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAS), Ashiru emphasized that ADC remains committed to upholding the rule of law and constitutional provisions.

“Initially, we were reluctant to participate, but our members and candidates encouraged to be involved, especially in areas where they believe they have political power,” he said. “In the end, the party decided to comply with the constitution.”

Ashiru also asked LasiC to ensure a transparent and credible selection process. “At the end of this election, people will judge the credibility of LasiC, because ideally, parties must win in the area where they have strong grassroots support,” he added.
