AFCON 2025: December 2025 to January 2026 in Morocco

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced a new date for the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) during a virtual executive meeting held on Friday.

The 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be held from December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026.

The competition was rescheduled from its original date of summer 2025 to avoid conflicts with the fifa Expansion of the Club World Cup.

Qualifying matches for AFCON 2025 will take place in September and October 2024, with the draw taking place in Johannesburg, South Africa, the following month.

The host country of the competition, Morocco, has already been chosen.

Nigeria lost 2-1 against the hosts in the 2023 African Cup of Nations championship match in Ivory Coast, where they finished second overall.

Despite the defeat, Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong was named Tournament Most Valuable Player. Troost-Ekong, center back for Greek champions PAOK, scored three crucial goals, helping Nigeria reach the AFCON final for the first time in 11 years.

Nigeria’s immediate objective will be to qualify for AFCON 2025, after which the Super Eagles will turn their attention to winning the tournament in Morocco.

The Super Eagles have not won the continental title since 2013, when coach Stephen Keshi led them to victory in South Africa. Nigeria has won the African Cup of Nations three times before, with victories in 1980, 1994 and 2013.
