The Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro shared his insights after their 1-0 victory against AFCON host nation Ivory Coast.
Captain William Troost-Ekong secured the lone goal from the penalty spot, and Peseiro shed light on the strategic brilliance that propelled Nigeria to success.
“I think we played a good game; we beat a very good team. Cote d’Ivoire is a very good team,” remarked Peseiro, emphasizing the challenging nature of the opposition. He delved into the game plan, highlighting the strategic approach to create defensive blocks against a formidable opponent.

The coach commended his players for executing the strategy effectively, stating, “This team, I think we block well. Cote d’Ivoire did a fantastic job. we choose a good strategy.” Peseiro emphasized the importance of closing spaces between lines and disrupting Ivory Coast’s rhythm, preventing them from creating clear opportunities in the first half.
Peseiro acknowledged the success of the strategy, noting, “They did very well in counter-attack. But we create opportunities. In the last 20 minutes, we could score the second goal because we created a chance with more players, more space, and more opportunities.”
While praising the players for adapting to the strategy, Peseiro expressed a desire for more ball possession control in certain moments. He noted the players’ sense of safety and control but urged them to maintain a proactive approach, emphasizing the importance of stress-free possession.
Looking ahead to the upcoming match against Guinea Bissau, Peseiro emphasized the need for the team to rest well, maintain a balanced diet, and focus on training. He stated, “Next match is more important,” highlighting the continuous challenges the team faces in the tournament.
In response to a question about the perception that Ivory Coast was expected to win, Peseiro confidently asserted, “We were the better team, The best strategy, we created more chances.” He emphasized the unpredictability of football, where even the underdog can secure victory based on strategy and execution.
Peseiro addressed the tournament’s competitive nature, stating, “we scored one today; and said to the players you score one goal at least. If you don’t concede a goal, you win.” He acknowledged the potential for unexpected outcomes and stressed the importance of adapting strategies to counter opponents effectively.
Peseiro reflected on the meticulous preparation leading up to the match, revealing, “I prepared a strategy before the last four days in Abu Dhabi.” He outlined the need to block Ivory Coast’s strengths and control the game strategically.
