Afenifere urges Tinubu to save Nigeria from imminent collapse

Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has called on President Bola Tinubu to do everything possible to save the country from imminent collapse.

The group which voiced its concerns after its regular quarterly meeting held in Isanya-Ogbo, Ogun State, said Nigeria was on the verge of total collapse due to the policies adopted by the Tinubu-led administration since it came to power last year.

In a communique issued jointly on Saturday by Afenifere Deputy Leader Oladipo Olaitan and Deputy Secretary-General Alade Rotimi-John, the group said the state of the country has left the people confused and if this bad trend is not stopped, the country could collapse.

Afenifere also noted that the majority of Nigerians are “distressed by widespread hardship, crippling hunger, persistent insecurity in the country, runaway inflation and massive unemployment, all of which have left the people worse off than before.”

The group also condemned what it called the government’s “reckless, stubborn and indifferent attitude to the long-term impacts of its lack of forethought or purpose regarding the handling of public revenues.”

The group condemned some of the Tinubu administration’s “wasteful tendencies or propensity to waste resources,” saying the $100 million or 240 billion Naira purchase price for an Airbus A330 as a presidential jet and an additional $50 million for repairs was unnecessary.

It was specifically mentioned that the N950 million budget used for the purchase of a new set of Cadillac Escalade Limousine SUV armoured vehicles as a proper vehicle for the President, N21 billion for the renovation of a new house for the Vice President, N90 billion as subsidy for religious pilgrimage and N10 billion for the renovation of the Presidential Guesthouse on Ribadu Road, Lagos, among others, gives an idea of the wasteful nature of the administration.

“Afenifere is ashamed and offended by the hatred and bad image in the international or global world that this wasteful and wasteful expenditure has caused,” the group said.

“We wonder why a government can be so adept at diversionary tactics just to lull the people and confuse them when they wake up amidst a difficult national situation and heated or prolonged debates about its inconsistent or unmethodical handling of the government,” the statement added.
