AFN names 92 athletes for championships of the third CAA U-18/U-20

The Nigeria Athletics Federation (AFN) has appointed its official team for the third CAA U-18/U-20 championship that begins on Wednesday at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta, state of Ogun, Southwest, Nigeria.

The team was appointed Tuesday by AFN president, Tonobok Okowa, and technical director Gabriel Okon.

51 team members are men, while 41 are women.

The team moved to the village of the championship on Monday after two weeks of camping shortly after the national tests in Shagamu, state of Ogun under the close surveillance of the technical committee of the AFN led by Gabriel Okon.

A team breakdown shows that 23 boys and 17 girls will compete for honors in the U-18 category, while 23 girls and 29 boys will come honors in the U-20 category of the championships.

U-18:
Girls – 18 athletes – 17 events
Children – 22 athletes – 17 events

U-20:
Girls – 24 athletes – 18 events
Children – 28 athletes – 19 events

Okon said the Technical Committee analyzed the very critical strength and tactical skills and through the events in which we have advantage, before selecting each member of the Nigeria team.

“I am sure that this will go to places, they are the future of Nigeria’s athletics. They are young, anxious to learn and that the spirit in the camp is high,” Okon said a former Sprint.

Meanwhile, the president of the AFN, Chief Tonobok Okowa, accused the members of the Nigeria team to go to glory in the competition that begins on Wednesday.

“It is not a victory at all costs, but they must run, jump and launch with the heat and determination to succeed, we are completely committed to this project of sitting a solid base,” Okowa said.

“We went to Nandola, Zambia two years ago with 41 athletes and the team ended on the podium. This time we want to run for the superior honor,” added Okowa, vice president of the Confederation of African Athetic.

Theitope Adela and the Honorable Victor Clement are the captains of the team, Adela leads girls and Clement is the boys leader.
