Pavel Durov, CEO of cloud-based mobile and desktop messaging app Telegram, has assured its users of stricter moderation on the platform after receiving initial demands.
The 39-year-old billionaire in a post shared on his official account X stated that Telegram will introduce new features while removing some outdated ones.
Durov noted that 99.999% of Telegram users have nothing to do with crime, but the 0.001% who engage in illicit activities create a bad image for the entire platform, jeopardizing the interests of other users.
He further noted in his post on X that this year, the platform committed to changing moderation on Telegram from an area of criticism to an area of praise.
Durov wrote on X; Telegram has reached 10 million paid subscribers. 10 million people are now enjoying Telegram Premium!
”Today, we are introducing new features while removing some outdated ones.
”We have removed the People Nearby feature, which was used by less than 0.1% of Telegram users, but had problems with bots and scammers.

”Instead, we will launch “Businesses Nearby,” which features legitimate, verified businesses. These businesses will be able to display product catalogs and accept payments easily.
”We also disabled new media uploads to the Telegraph, our standalone blogging tool, which appears to have been abused by an anonymous actor.
”While 99.999% of Telegram users have nothing to do with crime, the 0.001% who engage in illicit activities create a bad image for the entire platform, jeopardizing the interests of our nearly billion users.
”That’s why this year we’re committed to changing moderation on Telegram from an area of criticism to an area of praise.
His comments come days after Paris prosecutors filed preliminary charges against Durov, who is currently the subject of an official investigation in France as part of an organised crime probe into the messaging app.
According to a statement issued by Paris prosecutors, Durov has been placed under formal investigation for a number of alleged offences, including refusing to cooperate with law enforcement, facilitating the illegal activities of an organised gang on internet platforms, and participating in the organised criminal distribution of child sex photos.
