After sacking the council chairman, Rivers prepares for LG elections amid tensions

The Rivers State Independent National Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced the commencement of the local government election process, following the expiry of the term of office of elected chairmen and councilors in the 23 local government areas of the state.

This development comes after a crisis erupted in the state, triggered by the swearing in of interim committee chairmen by Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

RSIEC Chairman Judge Adolphus Enebeli (ret.) invited all political parties, stakeholders, traditional rulers, security agencies, religious organizations and the media to meet on July 1 to reveal the schedule and guidelines for the 2024 regional elections.

The meeting is scheduled for July 1 at the RSIEC Headquarters in Port Harcourt. The invitation was extended to all registered political parties, civil society groups, non-governmental organizations, community-based groups and voters.

The notice read, “Chairman of the Rivers State Independent National Electoral Commission, Justice Adolphus Enebell, hereby invites: Leaders of all registered Political Parties, Traditional Rulers, Security Agencies, Religious Organizations, Media, Professional Organizations, Civil Society Groups, Non-Organizations Community Based Group Government and Voters at a general stakeholder meeting on Monday, July 1, 2024 at RSIEC Headquarters, 239-243 Aba Road, Port Harcourt.

“The highlight of this meeting was the presentation of the schedule and guidelines for holding the 2024 regional elections in the state. All interested parties must be seated in the RSIEC Auditorium no later than 09:45.”

This development marks a significant step towards resolving political tensions in Rivers State, as the election process is expected to bring new leadership to the local government council.

The meeting on July 1 will set the stage for the elections, and all eyes will be on RSIEC to ensure a free, fair and credible process.
