The Minister of Federal Capital Region (FCT) Nyesom Wike, has ordered aggressive strong actions against street beggars, scavengers, illegal traders, and criminal syndicates, including the famous “one opportunity” operator, which is increasingly seen as a threat to public safety and city image.
A statement issued on Wednesday by Lere Olayinka, a special assistant to the minister’s senior for public communication and social media, revealed that the multi-agency task force had been deployed throughout Abuja and its satellite cities under the initiative code mentioned as the Operation of the Abuja sweep. “
According to the statement, joint operations are being executed in accordance with the Abuja Environmental Protection Law and other related laws, which are targeting all individuals whose activities raise risks to the safety, cleanliness, and order of the Capital City.
“In line with the Abuja environmental protection law, and other related laws, the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, has directed evacuation immediately criminals, street beggars and traders, scavengers and other criminal elements from FCT,” the statement said.

Olayinka stressed that the campaign was not only cosmetics, but part of a broader strategy to make Abuja safer and neater as the national capital.
“The capital of our nation must be a symbol of pride and safe beauty, not a site for beggars and street scavengers, most of which are criminal elements agents,” he said. “To achieve this, the joint task force, consisting of relevant FCT security institutions and natural resources, has been deployed to capture any person who is found to beg, scavenging, wandering, or involved in other actions that are contrary to the welfare of the population.”
The statement added that the arrangement was there to create a profile that was captured correctly and repatriate it to the government of each state.
“The security of life and property of the FCT population is very important for the government. We all have to join hands to reach the safer Abuja,” he concluded.
This exercise, which has been going on, is expected to increase in the coming weeks, targeting black spots and the flame points known for the crime of street levels, open bowel movements, illegal markets, and beggars.
The new step came immediately after the Senator Itribibe who represented the FCT had reviled Wike for the increasing wave of crime in the capital under its supervision.
