Nigeria’s leading airline, Air Peace, has dismissed reports that its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Allen Onyema, and Deputy Chairman, Alice Onyema, are facing a tax evasion lawsuit filed by the Lagos State Government, describing the claims as capricious and devoid of substance.
In a statement released on Monday, the airline expressed concern over the report, and noted that neither the company nor its top executives had received a formal subpoena or official notification regarding the alleged lawsuit. The report questioned how legal proceedings could reportedly be initiated in February without proper service.
The airline pointed to previous media publications claiming that a legal dispute had arisen over alleged tax liabilities of around ₦94 million, which was reportedly initiated by state revenue authorities shortly after Onyema publicly criticized federal tax reforms.
Reaffirming its commitment to regulatory compliance, Air Peace confirmed that all its tax obligations—both corporate and personal—have been completed in full accordance with applicable law.
The statement read in part, “We wish to state unequivocally that neither Onyemas nor Air Peace have received any court summons or official notification regarding the lawsuit. “The claim that legal proceedings have been ongoing since February, without any formal service or communication, is quite surprising and shocking.
“We are of the opinion that all personal and corporate tax obligations have been met and remain current, in full compliance with applicable laws and regulatory requirements. However, if there are any discrepancies in tax calculations, Onyemas and Air Peace remain open to engaging the Lagos State Government to review and reconcile any deficiencies, if any, for the sake of transparency, clarity and due process.”

While denying the allegations, the airline signaled its readiness to resolve potential issues through dialogue, and stressed that constructive engagement would ensure clarity and accountability.
Air Peace also highlighted its leadership role in advancing Nigeria’s aviation sector, stating that Onyemas continues to demonstrate resilience and patriotism in maintaining operations despite economic challenges. The company added that it remains focused on providing safe and reliable air travel services and will not be distracted by the controversy.
