Akwa Ibom Govt declares 2 desired doctors after fleeing abroad

The state government of Akwa Ibom said that two desired doctors for presumably abdicated after being trained for eight years by the state government.

The state commissioner of Akwa Ibom for health, dr. Ekem John made this known in a press conference in Uyo, the state capital, Tuesday 16 September 2025.

John has identified doctors as the radiologist consultant Dr Uduakabasi Ita and the hematologist of the consultant Dr Mfonobong Bassey, both members of the Ministry of Health of the State of Akwa Ibom.

The commissioner said that the doctors left their duty for green pastures without first serving the state to cover the cost of their formation by the state government.

John said: “The state government has repeatedly stated that any medical staff who train is a bond first to serve the state to cover the cost of training before it can be authorized to leave for more green pastures.

“The Ministry of Health declared them desired. We will stop their salaries; follow them until we find them. Any country in which they go, we will go to the medical and dental advice of that country and we will stop them.

“It is to their interest to immediately report to the Ministry of Health of Akwa Ibom as we will not be held responsible once the medical and dental advice begins to sit.

“Now that they have not been invited and there is no problem, we ask that their families reach them to report immediately to the Ministry of Health.”

The commissioner also declared that with the development, in the future, all medical officers trained by the state government must serve the agreed number of years in the state before being authorized to resign.

He invited the medical staff to immediately return to their service posts in the state civil service or reimburse all the resources spent for their training by the Akwa Ibom state government.

The commissioner stressed that the government would not allow his best hands to get out of the service for “more green pastures” without first serving the people of the state of Akwa Ibom “whose resources have been deployed for their training”.

John also praised the Governor Umbo Eno for declaring a state of emergency in the health sector, adding that the state of Akwa Ibom was positioned for the best health system pursuant to the agenda of the current administration.
