Carlos Alcaraz offered an extraordinary sports moment on Sunday during his game of the fourth round against Ben Shelton in Roland Garros, where a foul was called at a crucial moment at the beginning of the second set.
Using 7-6 (8), 0-0, 30/30, the reigning champion approached the net by a right and put a shot in the open field.
Shelton climbed and fired a powerful cross of the cross, forcing Alcaraz to stretch completely for the answer.
The Spaniard managed to get in touch and seemed to hit a clean winner.
The point was initially assigned to Alcaraz, but the 22 -year -old immediately warned the referee that he had lost his grip on the racket halfway stress and had put in touch with the ball while he was no longer in his hand.
According to the rules, this meant that the point belonged to Shelton.
In his post-game press conference, Alcaraz was asked if he thought he was silent.
“You know, I have to say, I thought:” Ok, I couldn’t say anything “, but I would have felt guilty if I hadn’t said anything about it,” he replied.
“It is just about I have done a wrong thing, wrong blows or an illegal shot, I must say. I have to be honest with myself. I have to be honest with Ben, with everyone.
“I think it’s sport, or [it] It should be so, “he continued.
“Just to be honest with the opponent, with yourself. I said it because I knew it was an illegal shot. It shouldn’t be allowed, so that’s why I said it.”
Despite having granted the point, Alcaraz has grouped quickly and took service, saving six pause points.
In discussing the accident, Alcaraz also noticed a moment of sportiness from Shelton who went under the radar in the opening set: “He had something else well, for example. His service touched the net. The referee does not [call] And [Shelton] He asked me: “We can repeat it if you want.”
“Therefore, it is only about the respect for each other, and I think that sport in general should be like this.”
The Alcaraz reigning champion finally defeated Shelton 7-6 (8), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to book his quarter of the final in the French capital.
