Alleged Shepherd Killing 17 in Benue

Armediated people suspected of being a shepherd on Thursday killed 17 people and injured many others in the logo and regional government of the Ukum in the state of Benue.

Spokesman for the State Police Command, Anene Sewuese, revealed this in a statement on Friday in Makurdi.

He said five people were killed in Ukum and 12 in the LGA logo.

Anene said: “On 17/4/2025 around 21: 00 hours, information was received that a large number of alleged militias had invaded the axis of Sankera State Benue to attack the community around the GBAGIR, the regional area of the Ukum.

“After receiving this report, Police Commissioner, Benue State Police Command, CP. Steve Yabanet, ordered a tactical team to move to the area and join police officers on land and other security agents to prevent the attack.

“Following this order, the officers’ team moved to the area and involved them. While the attackers were rejected in the early morning, they fired sporadically to farmers who were not suspicious when they found them.

“Five people were found in the Gbagir area and were taken to the hospital, where they were confirmed to die.

“Unfortunately, an unexpected simultaneous attack was carried out in a logo where 12 people were killed before the arrival of the police, making a total of 17 people.

“However, the security agent in the Sankera axis still involved the bandits when they retreated to the forest around the Taraba axis.”

Anene warns social media users who report reports that have not been confirmed and incite the general public to quit these actions.
