Amaechi, Imoke leadership strategy committee in the Anti-Tinubu opposition block emerged

The plan for a strong opposition ahead of 2027 general election is a clearer form, with former Governor Rotimi Amaechi from Rivers State and Liyel Imoke from the Cross River State appointed to lead two main committees that will determine the political direction of the new coalition that challenges the leadership of the Tinubu Bola President.

This development was announced on Thursday in Abuja during a meeting that was expanded from the North Democratic League (LND), a political group that officially expressed its support for the increasing opposition alliance.

The communication from the meeting was read by Dr. Umar Ardo, Convener of the LND.

Present at the meeting were influential northern political leaders, including former Governor of Kano Ibrahim Shekarau and other elite figures. The broader coalition, which includes political heavy class such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, are currently weighing whether to form a new party or consolidate with existing ones.

Speaking to reporters, Dr. Ardo explained the specific role assigned to two former governors.

“The coalition formed two committees, among others, to consider the desire or feasibility of registering new political parties and considering merged into existing political parties,” he said.

“The Committee to combine other political parties led by former Governor Liyel Imoke and the Committee to register a new political party chaired by Governor Rotimi Amaechi. I am a sub -committee secretary to register new political parties.”

According to Ardo, the final decision regarding which path will be pursued by the coalition is expected on May 30.

“We decided to support the national opposition coalition group for transition politics to 2027 and contribute to dialogue both to register new political parties as vehicles to encourage politics or integrate to existing political parties,” he added.

When the discussion continues, the coalition also considers in line with established parties such as the Democratic Party (ADP) or Social Democratic Party (SDP), if consensus is not achieved to form a new political entity.

“Former Governor Nasir El-Rufai brought a complaint that SDP was interested in considering to combine. For this reason, the committee formed the 30th of this month to decide to leave with ADC, SDP or formed a new political party. So, we in the LND here have decided to support that position,” Ardo said.

He further revealed that LND plans to directly involve 19 North Governors about the issue of insecurity, poverty, and backwardness that interfere with the region.

“We also decided to involve 19 northern governors about the terrible situation in the north – endemic poverty, poverty, insecurity, and unemployment faced by northern Nigeria. Most of us have agreed that the biggest problem is the inertia of our 19 northern governors,” he said.

“We decided that we would involve them in one way or another. We decided to mobilize the north and with the extension of all Nigerians to pressure the government, especially the legislators to uphold, defend and protect the Nigerian constitution,” Ardo concluded.
