Amnesty International on Friday alleged that more than 1,000 #EndBadGovernance protesters were being held in prisons across the country.
A protest brought together by a group of Nigerians to express their dissatisfaction with the hardships and other socio-economic challenges in the country turned violent in the North with several properties being looted and destroyed by suspected hoodlums.
Several Nigerian citizens and a number of foreign nationals were arrested by security agents for flying Russian and other foreign flags during demonstrations that took place from August 1-10 in Kano, Kaduna and other states in the North.
In a post on its X account, the human rights watchdog accused the Nigerian government of cracking down on peaceful protesters by filing charges against more than 1,000 protesters in courts across the country.
The caption reads: Nigerian authorities are escalating a crackdown on peaceful protesters against hunger and corruption.
“More than 1,000 people have been detained across the country. Today, 441 people have been charged in Kano, in what is considered an unfair trial based on trumped-up charges.
βAmnesty International reiterates its call for the immediate and unconditional release of all those arrested for exercising their right to peaceful assembly.
βThe Nigerian government has an obligation to uphold the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.β
