An angry mob killed a man over alleged blasphemy in Bauchi

A youth identified as Yunusa of Nasaru village in Ningi local government area of ​​Bauchi State who allegedly committed blasphemy against the Prophet Muhammad has been killed by a mob.

The incident occurred on Wednesday after the deceased allegedly made insulting comments about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The incident that occurred in the village at around 15.00 WIB, as told by a witness who did not want to be named, said that Yunusa made blasphemous comments during a heated argument between him and his friends.

According to the source, β€œthe victim is a member of the Faira sect of Islam, he was heard saying insulting words to the Prophet. Several young people challenged Yunusa to retract his statement, but Yunusa insisted he would not do so. He even repeated it. That’s when they started beating him.”

Reportedly, National Police personnel tried their best to save Yunusa but were defeated by the mob who used stones, sticks and other dangerous objects to beat him to death.

Reports further stated that the mob tried to burn down the Police Station in the village when the Police tried to protect it there.

Meanwhile, the Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed the grisly murder of Yunusa

The Command admitted that it was deeply saddened by the disaster in Nasaru Village which occurred on Wednesday, June 19 2024.

A statement from the PPRO Command, SP Ahmed Wakili, emphasized, β€œIt has come to our attention that a person named Usman is involved in sharing information about a new religious movement known as the Fera Movement. Unfortunately, this led to tensions and arguments, resulting in the loss of his life.”

Police Commissioner Auwal Musa Muhammad condemned the actions of the individuals involved and emphasized the importance of law enforcement.

The statement stated that, β€œThe public must cooperate with law enforcement agencies and not take action on their own. We urge the public to remain calm and carry out daily activities without fear of intimidation, as normalcy has been restored in the affected areas.”

He added that, β€œBauchi State Police Command will provide updates on the investigation as it progresses. We also call on parents, guardians, community leaders and authorities to maintain vigilance and intervene when necessary to prevent similar incidents in the future.”
