An officer died as a police officer, NSCDC Clash on Ebonyi

A police officer died during a clash between special weapons and tactics (SWAT) operations from the Nigerian police, and the Nigerian Civil Defense and Security Corps (NSCDC) at Ebonyi on Wednesday.

NSCDC Public Relations Officer in the State, Ms. Emmanuella Ibeneme, confirmed the incident to journalists on Thursday in Abakaliki.

He said the police officer was killed while two civilians suffered a shot injury in the incident that occurred at the Mamoro Ajorenyim mining site which was disputed in the Amaze community, Ishiarage in the regional government of IVO in the state.

Ibeneme said the investigation was still ongoing to ascertain the cause of the incident.

“We are a security agent in charge of protecting critical national assets, including mining sites, and our people are deployed to provide security to companies owned by China.

“People from Swat, Nigerian police, were recruited to the area; the information we received was that the quarrel took place between the institutions, which led to the exchange of shots that resulted in the death of a police officer and an injury to two civilians.

“Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the actual causes of the SAD incident to set mistakes,” said NSCDC spokesman.

Police public relations officers at Ebonyi, Joshua Ukandu, also confirmed the death.

He said the investigation was ongoing to uncover the motives behind the police obstruction sent to carry out legal orders in the area.

“Ebonyi police arrested an NSCDC officer who prevented the legitimate arrest at Ivo, trying to seize a rifle, and fatal to shoot a police officer.

“Investigations are ongoing; Command warns not to obstruct the task of the police,” Ukandu said.
