Angry young men in the Nyorhyungu area in Makurdi, the capital of the state of Benue, on Monday, expelled the dozens of cattle belonging to members of the House of Representatives representing Makurdi/Guma Federal Constituency, Dickson Tarkighir, for allegedly accommodating the Fulani Shepherd in the area.
In a video that is trending, the angry young men are seen chasing cows when six shepherds arrive in the community, carried out by heavy armed escorts on Sunday night.
A journalist based in Makurdi who watched the scene, posted on social media that there was tension and panic because people from the community could not sleep after the arrival of livestock, the Fulani Shepherd and armed escort.
“People cannot sleep. There are panic everywhere. We are surprised to see armed escort with parade cows through our community,” he said.

“It feels like an invasion. Nobody knows what is happening or why they are here. During dawn, the community has erupted as a protest, with a number of young people taking to the streets to demand immediate transfer of livestock and thinkers.
“The protesters, singing and waving placards, accusing that the presence of shepherds raises security risks, especially given the new deadly attack on the agricultural community in the state of the benue.
“Confrontation reached the head when the young people, not affected by security personnel, began to pursue the herd out of the environment, forcing the Fulani herds to escape with them.
“Hon. Tarkighir then arrived at the scene in an attempt to calm the tension and explain the situation but the intervention was rejected unanimously by the protesters, who insisted that both cows and the handling of fulani they had to leave the area without delay.”
