The Patriots, a group of prominent figures led by the former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Head of Emeka Ayaoku, will meet with the leadership of the National Assembly in April, continuing their campaign for the new democratic constitution driven by the people.
This meeting, scheduled to the Senate and the House of Representatives, followed the previous involvement with the President of the Tinubu Bola at the President’s villa in Abuja on August 9, 2024.
Patriot membership offers a series of prominent Nigerians, including Ike Nwachukwu, Tanko Yakasai, Olusegun Osoba, Alani Akinrinade, Anya O. Anya, Idika Kalu, Obiageli Ezekwesili, Philip ASOODU, Patomi, Solomon Ezekwesili, Philip Asiodu, Patomi, Solomonon (Sania) ASIODU, PATOMON, PATOMI, PATOMON, PATOMI, PATOMI, PATOMI, PATONOMY, PATOMI, PATONOMY) ATTAH, Anthony Kila, and Labaran Maku.
The group that was read previously requested the President of Tinubu to hold a Constituent Assembly, allowing Nigerians from all regions to negotiate the constitution that reflects their collective wishes and aspirations. They argue that only a constitution rooted in the mandate of people’s democracy can effectively overcome the urgent challenges of the state, including difficulties, corruption, and insecurity.
This demand was repeated during the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the head of the group founder, Head of Fra Williams, which was held at Fra Williams Chambers in Lagos on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters at the event, Mr. Olawale Okunniyi, Secretary General of Patriot, outlined the group’s goals in involved with the National Assembly: to urge parliamentary members to change sections 8 and 9 of the 1999 constitution to combine the referendum/plebisite clause, empowering people to demand constitutional changes at that time.
Overcoming the question whether the 2014 National Conference can function as a Constituent Assembly, Okunniyi stressed the need for a referendum to determine its membership composition. “On August 9, 2024, we met with the President of the Tinubu Bola where we emphasize that there is a need to replace the 1999 constitution which has hampered our progress as a nation. We demand the President to immediately hold a constituent meeting for people to negotiate their existence.

He further detailed the group’s upcoming engagements: “our next plan is to meet with the leadership of the national assembly. We have made contact with the leadership of the national assembly and the meeting will happen in April. Separately, Howver, it will happen on the same day. After meeting the National Assembly, We Will, in the Same April, Begin Zonal Outreaches, Advocacy to Traditional Rules, Influential Leaders of Geopolitical Zone, Labor Leader.
Okunniyi criticized the failure of former President of Goodluck Jonathan to submit a 2014 National Conference Report as a Bill to the National Assembly for a referendum by the Constituent Assembly. He noted that the 2014 Confab report, along with the constitutions of 1963, 1979, 1989, and 1993, would function as work documents for the Constituent Assembly in the future.
Outside the meeting of the National Assembly, Patriot plans to expand their advocacy to labor leaders, influential figures, leaders of thought in all geopolitical zones, and traditional rulers, with zonal outreach initiatives that began in April.
The commemoration also featured contributions from Prof. Anthony Kila, Dr. Tokunbo Awolowo your sin, Fafa Dan-Princewill, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Ezenwa, and Kayode Williams, the son of the late Fra Williams.
The Kayode Williams stated optimism that patriot advocacy would succeed, emphasizing his belief in President Tinubu’s commitment to true federalism. Folar Williams, representatives of other families, emphasized the important role of the new constitution in building a good federal structure.
