The All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Campaign Council in Edo State on Wednesday urged the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to make drug testing mandatory for party candidates in the September 16 election in the state.
The council’s Media Director, Kassim Afegbua, made the call in a statement in Benin City.
He said candidates need to undergo serious drug tests to ensure their sanity.
Afegbua urged the NDLEA to focus on all candidates from frontline political parties to ensure their sanity.
At least 16 parties are fielding candidates in the election, with the APC candidate, Monday Okpebholo, and his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rival, Asue Ighodalo, seen by many as favourites to win the election.
He said: “We have received credible information that some of them are suspected to be heavy users of illicit substances, including alcohol.
“A test for all of them will reveal their level of sanity.
“Edo State is too good to have a governor who will embarrass its people.
“Anyone who wants to govern Edo State must not be a heavy consumer of marijuana.
“This is a prohibited substance, and we expect the NDLEA to verify and test the main candidates.
“Our candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo is ready to face any test, whenever he is called upon.
“We expect similar assurances from other candidates to ensure their level of sanity.
“It would be a shame if other citizens dragged our citizens into the mud by mistakenly voting for a candidate whose mental condition cannot be guaranteed.
“That is a huge risk that Edo people cannot afford to take. We are doing this to save our state, and we hope the NDLEA will act soon and do the needful.”
Afegbua said the council would continue to put pressure on the agency to grant the summons.
“We must expose candidates who pretend to be saints during the day but become notorious gangsters at night.
“With insecurity, unemployment, crumbling infrastructure, poor healthcare, lack of clean water and failing education in Edo State, the people deserve a sane governor to lead us to prosperity,” the spokesman added.
